Best duplicate photo finder for Mac: an honest comparison
If you want to clear duplicate photos or files from a Mac, you have a free built-in option, a few long-running paid apps, a couple of subscription apps, and an open-source tool. Here is what each one actually detects, what it costs, and what its own users complain about.
The short version
- Only duplicates inside the Photos library, and you want free: start with Apple Photos' Duplicates album. It is built in on macOS 13 and later.
- Folders, external drives, Lightroom, or "similar" shots, one-time price: PhotoSweeper has done this since 2011 for $14.99.
- You don't mind a subscription: Gemini 2 and Nektony's Duplicate File Finder cover the same ground with more marketing polish and more complaints about billing.
- Free and open source, and you're comfortable with a rough install: czkawka.
- SameScan is in development and not yet available, so it is listed last and not ranked.

Apple Photos' built-in Duplicates
Since macOS 13, Photos has a Duplicates album under Utilities. It finds exact duplicates inside your Photos library automatically and merges them, keeping the metadata from both. It costs nothing and it is already on your Mac.
Its limits are the limits of the Photos library. It does not look at folders, external drives, or backups. It has no "similar" detection and no threshold, so a resized export or a burst of near-identical shots stays. Users describe it as weak, report that it misses re-compressed copies from shared albums, and say it stalls on large libraries. Anything you remove sits in Recently Deleted for 30 days. There is a longer write-up in Does Apple Photos find duplicates?
PhotoSweeper
PhotoSweeper is the long-running one-time-purchase option: $14.99, sold direct and on the Mac App Store, around since 2011 and updated in July 2026. It covers folders, external drives, the Photos library, Lightroom Classic and Capture One catalogs (it can mark rejects), similar photos with an adjustable threshold, series of shots, videos including AVI and MKV, and RAW and HEIC files. Its Auto Mark rules choose which copy to keep, and removal goes to the Trash or a special album rather than deleting outright.
On the Mac App Store it has the most reviews of any app in this category, with 38 written in the last 12 months. Recent lower-rated reviews mention a dated interface and one user whose photos would not import. If you want a proven, inexpensive, non-subscription tool today, this is the one to try first.
Gemini 2
Gemini 2 is MacPaw's duplicate finder. It is a free download with a subscription at $19.95 per year, a $44.95 one-time licence outside the App Store, and it is included in Setapp. It handles the Photos library, folders and drives, similar photos with automatic selection, and videos. It was updated in September 2026.
Recent lower-rated App Store reviews report crashes, one user saying it stopped working on macOS 26.6.2, and frustration with the cancellation process. On Reddit, one user wrote that running Gemini 2 on an external drive was a "big mistake." One report, but worth weighing before pointing any tool at a drive you have not backed up.
Nektony Duplicate File Finder
Nektony's Duplicate File Finder Remover is freemium with a Pro upgrade sold as a subscription. It supports multiple Photos libraries, folders and drives, similar photos, and audio and video duplicates, and it asks you to review before deleting. It is actively maintained, with an update in October 2026, and had 46 reviews in the last 12 months.
The lower-rated reviews are mostly about billing ("subscription hell") and about matching. One reviewer wrote that it "goes by name, not content" and "almost deleted old family photos." Matching by file name rather than content is a real risk with any tool, so check how a finder decides two files are the same before you trust its selections.
Duplicate File Finder Pro
A $34.99 one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, with far fewer reviews than the apps above (71 in total, 8 in the last year). The recurring complaint in lower-rated reviews is that it is "horrible at identifying similar files." If similar-photo detection matters to you, the apps above do it better according to their own users.
czkawka (free, open source)
czkawka is an MIT-licensed open-source duplicate finder with a fast core and image-hash-based similar-photo detection. On a Mac you can run it through its GTK or Krokiet interfaces, or the community CzkawkaTauri build on MacUpdate. The catch is installation: there is no signed, drag-to-Applications download, and a common Reddit question is "no idea how to run this app with GUI." It has no Photos-library support. If you are comfortable with that, it is the best free option for folders and drives.
Where SameScan fits
SameScan is a one-time-purchase Mac app in development. It is built around a safe review flow: side-by-side comparison, keep-best rules that show their reasoning (largest, newest, RAW over JPEG, in Photos), Trash-only removal, and a restorable log. It will handle folders, external drives, the Photos library, and both exact and similar duplicates. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account.
It is not available yet, so it does not belong above any shipped product on this page. If the safety story is what you were missing from the tools above, join the launch list and we will email you once when it ships.
How to choose
- Back up first. Every tool on this list asks you to trust its matching. A Time Machine or clone backup makes any mistake recoverable.
- Check where your duplicates actually are. Inside Photos only: try the built-in album. Spread across drives and folders: you need a third-party tool. Our external drive guide covers the drive case.
- Prefer content matching over name matching, and prefer Trash over permanent delete.
- Decide on subscription vs one-time before you install. A duplicate cleaner is something most people run a few times a year.
